19 Jan January 18th Weekly Devotional
Our Father, who is in heaven. Matthew 6:9b
In the Old Testament, prayers, more often than not, God was addressed as LORD, LORD God, O LORD, my God, O LORD God of our fathers, Almighty God when His followers would approach Him in prayer.
Hannah addressed Him as LORD. King Hezekiah addressed Him as O LORD God of Israel. King Solomon addressed Him the same. Ezra said, O my God, Jehoshaphat calls Him O LORD God of our fathers. Habakkuk says, O LORD my God, my Holy One.
The LORD addressed Himself to Abraham in Gen. 17 as, “I am Almighty God;….”
Now, Jesus His Son has come and walked on this earth and experienced everything that mankind has and ever will experience. He made Himself a lowly servant. He made Himself lower than the angels. He made Himself lower than even us. He did it all perfectly, without sin.
And He did this all so that we could become joint heirs with Him in His kingdom. (Rom 8:17) Isn’t that the most wonderful thing that someone could ever do? He had it all to Himself, just Him and God Almighty. Perfect peace and paradise in Heaven. But They wanted to share it with us, Their creation, because of the enormous amount of love and compassion, mercy and forgiveness They have for us.
Jesus did all He did, so we would be able to come to God, humbly in prayer, and call Him, not just His Father, but our Father, Who is in Heaven. And Holy is His wonderful and powerful name. And because of Jesus, “Thy kingdom come” is here, and it is also our kingdom, and He is waiting for us to get there to enjoy it with Him, forever.
So as we begin a busy week, let us find peace, and joy, and comfort, knowing that Our Father is in Heaven, and He wants us to come and be with Him, and share it with all His saints, and His Son, our Brother, our family.
